Problem

Destination Winnipeg is a local, government-funded company with a mission to “stimulate and lead or participate in economic development and tourism opportunities in collaboration with a broad network of partners to derive economic growth for Winnipeg.”

Destination Winnipeg invited Velocity to be a part of the promotion of Winnipeg by asking us to create an oversized brochure promoting conventions in Winnipeg and 15 year calendar with upcoming events and highlights. With Velocity being stationed in Winnipeg this project was instantly appealing. To have the chance to promote all the positive aspects of your home town is a great honor.

Solution

“At the centre of it all” was the tagline we based the brochure on. Destination Winnipeg emphasizes that Winnipeg is a central location and an easy non-stop flight from most locations in Canada and the United States. The oversized brochure, 17"x22” which folds down to 8.5"x11", features fantastic photos from local photographers of Winnipeg’s scenery, convention hot spots, hotel accommodations and restaurants.

We used a graphic approach to illustrate Destination Winnipeg’s tagline. By playing with positive and negative space between the blocks of colour and photographs, we achieved a graphic representation of a target, which further emphasized “At the centre of it all". We felt the use of bold colours like bright green and metallic silver gave the brochure excellent shout value.

Results

This brochure was successfully used as a promotional tool for Winnipeg and will be distributed throughout Canada, the United States and Europe. 2007 / 2008 saw Winnipeg continue to grow with a recent international re-brand. It has also been a productive last twelve months with the highest economic growth in a decade. Stuart Duncan, President of Destination Winnipeg, states: These are exciting times and Winnipeg has changed significantly – evidenced with new buildings and developments, a buzz on the street, and a renewed sense of pride and confidence.
