On June 21st we were excited the Winnipeg Art Gallery’s website design won “Best of Region” at Design Edge Canada’s first-ever Regional Design Awards. Fifty-eight winners were chosen out of nearly 500 entires, with one project in each region being selected as “Best of Region.”
We’d like to thank Design Edge Canada for their recognition, as well as congratulate all the other winners. To learn more about the awards, click here. And to see the winners of our region, click here.

A week or two ago- where does the time go?- Karla was invited by Girls in Gaming Rural to Swan River, Manitoba to talk to students in the Visual Communications program at Swan Valley Regional Secondary School (SVRSS).
While the program covers everything under the umbrella of visual communications- from animation to typography to video production- Karla talked about what she knows best: herself. Well, OK- if we’re getting into specifics, she talked about her career in graphic design, how she became the owner of a business, the importance of networking in the professional world (and being a member of great organizations like GDC), and how much she enjoys to draw things.
“I had a blast,” Karla says.
And while Karla was seriously impressed by all of the student work, one project that really stood out (and astounded everyone at our office) was a Flash animation created by BlueMaroon, a Grade 10 animation wunderkind. Check it out: Sing, Kitty, Swing!
Oh, and Karla’s Crochet Weiner made a friend whilst in Swan River. But that was to be expected.

Velocity has created a Twitter account to, well, “tweet”. (Just joking- we know how to tweet.) Along with tweeting about the comings and goings in our office- and perhaps anything else that occurs up and down the street outside our window- we’ll also post funny and informative things, like why cow-tipping isn’t a meaningful pursuit, the best way to make a ham sandwich, and how Europe can fix its ailing economy.
Here’s our Twitter account: www.twitter.com/velocity_brand

May 13th was a good night for Velocity. Besides having an excellent meal complete with wine and dessert, we also went home with three awards from the Advertising Association of Winnipeg’s annual Signature Awards: one for best website for the Winnipeg Art Gallery (www.wag.ca), one for best ‘radio- single’ for the Cupcake Corner’s “Cup-Blankery” spot, and a ‘People’s Choice’ award for, once again, the Winnipeg Art Gallery’s website.
This year’s Signature Awards mark Velocity’s fourth win in the website category, while a first for the People’s Choice. We were also happy to win our first radio award, which created by our prosaic writer Jarrett. (He insisted on “prosaic writer” even though he’s not sure what it means.)
The Signature Awards are Manitoba’s biggest advertising awards ceremony, with dozens of design, advertising, and branding agencies submitting their best work to a worldwide panel of judges. The theme this year was ‘Lookin’ Good,’ but the night was really about mustaches. (Though, our table also spoke fondly of the soup.)

Quietly, in the middle of April, Velocity Branding and Visual Lizard launched the Manitoba Lotteries Corporation’s new Casinos of Winnipeg websites. Now, several weeks later, the sites are still looking good.
Type the address into your browser- www.casinosofwinnipeg.com- and you’ll find a robust and easy website keeping visitors up-to-date on the latest shows and events happening at both Club Regent and McPhillips Station. But that’s not all: there are also two distinct websites for the casinos, each with their own colour scheme and feel.
Velocity was responsible for the design and layout of the websites, while Visual Lizard made sure the coding and program looked just as nice. MLC provided the casinos.
